Overview
We haven’t experienced silence off-roading. but this is what you can expect from the Wrangler 4xe. Jeep says the Wrangler is accurate for 21 miles of all-electric class, which works out to a few hours of electric-only trail riding, at which point the gas engine will push to bring you home. The Wrangler 4xe is provided only in the four-door Unlimited body style with a single powertrain, which expands its off-road chops to mean an electrified full-family adventure.
Unique powertrain options
A hybrid powertrain Wrangler is loved more than any other plug-in hybrid in America. It’s the best-selling PHEV in the country, and Jeep will expand its trim offerings for 2024 to a total of six. Additionally, it contains an electric motor converted into the 8th-speed automatic transmission. Collaborated output is a stout 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Two transfer case options provide locking differentials, and it offers multiple axle ratios, depending on which trim you select.
Competitors to consider
Only this provides the Wrangler 4xe’s off-road capability, linked to its electric-only range and flexible operation. The Ford Bronco is fitted with a turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder. It’s not a hybrid when operating only on gasoline, but it does match the 4xe’s combined mpg rating. And it’s cheaper than the Jeep. The Land Rover Defender and Toyota 4Runner can also be considered.
What’s it like to live with?
We drove a 2018 Wrangler limitlessly for 2 years and 50,000 miles in the long-term fleet, using it day-to-day in the city and going off-road. Though Jeep missed the 4xe’s hybrid powertrain, many of the observations can still be applied.

How does the Wrangler 4×4 drive?
The 4xe has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and comes with a plug-in hybrid system, boasting 375 hp. That’s a significant boost over the Wrangler’s base V6 and normal turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The fully charged Wrangler Rubicon 4xe accelerated from 0 to 60 mph within 7 seconds.
The extra weight of the 4×4 powertrain enables it to take a toll on braking performance. The Rubicon 4×4 required 150 feet to come to a stop—that is longer than most SUV requirements. Otherwise, the brakes are pretty consistent and simple to use in typical driving.
The Wrangler Rubicon’s off-road has big tires that are super, forbidding the front stabilizer bar and lockable differentials. The 4xe has minimal departure instead of a regular Wrangler because of the extra security needed for the battery; it’s a small trade-off for what you gain.

How comfortable is the Wrangler 4xe?
The robust construction offers a frictional ride—mostly in the off-road-ready Rubicon trim. The boxy design and big tires make a crust of wind and road noise, especially with the choice of a power-retractable soft top. It is seen that the extra weight of the 4×4 powertrain helped settle the Wrangler’s ride on the highway a little.
The Wrangler doesn’t place much importance on the passenger comfort zone, but among the highlights are that the front seats are in good shape and remain livable on long drives and trips. The rear bench is flatter and firmer. The effective climate system, which also features rear air vents, is most liked by people.

How’s the interior?
The Wrangler’s high stance means everyone is in need of the grab handles to get inside. Once it’s done, you’ll find that the Wrangler Unlimited has an appropriate amount of passenger space. Though there are many controls,the pattern is refreshingly intuitive. The cylindrical pillars and square windows greatly eliminate blind spots.
The driving position offers adjustments from the seat and steering wheel. One of the Wrangler’s most attractive features is its removable top. You can get the top of your choice—a soft top, a hardtop, or the handy one—but it’s a bit heavy on your pocket. The Sky One-Touch power top makes for fun with an open roof.

How’s the tech?
To see Wrangler’s big center touchscreen in all lighting conditions and respond quickly to your touches is very simple. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone introductions are normal, and there are many off-road apps to experience on the trails that are even more fun. The Wrangler Falcon has advanced driver assistance systems. Jeep provides the features, such as blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control, which are optional for every Wrangler trim stage.

How’s the storage?
The Jeep’s narrow body is an off-road strength, but it does have limited cargo capacity compared to the Ford Bronco. If you want to carry extra stuff,the rear seats fold neatly into the floor. And there are six rugged tie-down points and an underfloor compartment. Up front, there aren’t many places to store small items, and the door pockets work as shallow nets.

How’s the fuel economy?
If you can plug the 4xe in on a daily basis and you’ve got a relatively short commute, it can make decent sense. The EPA’s idea for electric range with the 4×4 is 22 miles before the engine comes to life. It can manage to squeeze 18.7 miles into our best choice.
The Wrangler 4xe’s electrical efficiency is pretty poor too, or at least compared to other plug-in hybrids. The Wrangler Rubicon is brick-shaped and has large knobby tires.
The 4xe is only rated at 20 mpg combined when the electric power runs out. Ironically, that’s no better than the Wrangler with its V6 engine. On our mixed-driving evaluation route, we achieved 20.2 mpg after running out of electricity.

Is the Wrangler 4xe a good value?
Find a specific buyer for the 4×4 to be of good value. Opting for the 4×4 powertrain adds thousands of dollars to the price of a regular gas-only Wrangler. To offset that, it’s important to make the most of the EPA-estimated 22 miles of all-electric range and charge the hybrid battery as regularly as you can to help reduce your use of gas.
Build quality because it is on other Wranglers, unique, and satisfying. The materials are wonderful and have a good tactile feel, but they have the same interior and are less expensive than Wranglers. Jeep’s warranty coverage and roadside performance are average.

Some vehicles are as unique as the Jeep Wrangler. It is one of the few no-compromise off-road vehicles left. Take that and combine it with a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain, and you’ve got a unique vehicle by pretty much every standard.
Which Wrangler 4xe is recommended?
Which Wrangler is recommended depends on how aggressive you are about off-roading. If you’re so aggressive, then go for the 4×4 Rubicon, which comes with features like locking differentials, lower gearing, heavy-duty axles, and 33-inch tires. If, however, you want a Wrangler for more civilized pursuits, the Sport S with the Convenience Group offers many amenities, such as 20-inch wheels, heated front seats, and remote start. It is quite less expensive than the Sahara and will still meet most people’s off-roading requirements.
